Jointmeal (Qurs Awja) is a polyherbal formulation that is used in the Unani system of medicine for treatment of RA (Rheumatoid Arthritis) and other joint disorders. It is composed of the extracts of 17 individual medicinal plants. Some of the individual constituents of this polyherbal formulation have been more effective for joint health. Such as, Colchicum luteum has been shown to afford symptomatic relief in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, Foeniculum vulgare has been found to be effective in reducing carrageenan induced paw oedema (swelling), Zingiber officinale has been shown to decrease pain and swelling in arthritis patients, Operculina turpethum has been shown to reduced edema volume in formalin induced inflammation. Withania somnifera include alkaloids, steroidal lactones and saponins which chemicals reduce swelling, inflammation, arthritis, etc. Piper longum, Asparagus, Gum Guggul are also use for joint disease. Aloe barbadensis is a powerful anti-inflammatory and analgesic, this plant is a specific in the treatment of arthritic conditions. Many people with joint dysfunction have experienced increased mobility and less pain after regularly drinking Aloe Vera Juice.

Pharmacology:
* Anti-inflammatory activity of Jointmeal was tested on interleukin 1β (IL1β)- stimulated fibroblast like synoviocytes derived form patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
* Jointmeal reduce arthritis was induced by administration of either formaldehyde (2% v/v) or CFA(complete Freund’s adjuvant-induced arthritis) into the subplantar surface of the hind paw.
* Jointmeal also important for the expression of proinflammatory mediators (TNF-R1, IL-6 and IL-1β) was also found to be less.
